Within a week after that meeting, members of the Department of Public Safety, the Governor’s Office, Missouri Veterans Commission, and Design and Construction, flew by helicopter to the suggested site location. After a short period of time, it was learned that the site was approved but was being planned for the west side of Highway 367 just south of Highway 270. It was that group that put together the legislative package for the Veterans Home in St. Louis.
The local citizens that make up the Assistance League are all volunteers, who spend their time fundraising to help the nation’s finest enjoy a wonderful quality of life. The Veterans Home, in conjunction with the STLVHAL, are here to serve those who have served. “Between Missouri and Illinois, you have close to 1,200 known homeless veterans. Each tiny house provides everything a Veteran needs to live with dignity and security; new furniture, appliances, housewares, bedding, personal items, and utilities - all free of charge.

Each Veteran meets with their Social Worker at least bi-weekly to engage in Clinical Case Management services. We are a 21-unit apartment site, housing up to 40 Veterans or Veteran families.

Currently, 66 percent of the Veterans served identify as Black or African American. When a Veteran comes in for an assessment at intake, we ask about their cultural considerations to ensure we are serving that individual Veteran to the best of our capabilities. We’re committed to making the greater St. Louis area a better place to live, work and thrive for all. We build community partnerships with those organizations and individuals that also work toward the same goal for the greater St. Louis area. Missouri Veterans Endeavor (MOVE-STL) is a community for Veterans experiencing homelessness and their families.

The first two units in the B200 and B300 wings were completed in January, 2020, and veterans took occupancy of their new rooms in February.

Once on site, each family member is assigned a Social Worker for Clinical Case Management services. The project is modeled after VCP’s Kansas City model which has already served more than 4,100 at-risk Veterans and successfully transitioned more than 40 formerly homeless Veterans into permanent housing since its opening in 2018. Although the St. Louis Veterans’ Home Committee officially dissolved in the summer of 2018, it has been replaced by the STL Veterans Home Assistance League, which carries out the outstanding service provided by the former Committee. Louis Assistance League on April 25, 1990, long before construction was started. It had to be close to utilities, but far away from noise and other negatives. The ideal site would need to be at least 15 acres, but much more would be preferred. At that time, good acreage was running about $33,000 an acre and the state wanted the land to be donated, as it was in all other home locations. Over the next several years, numerous sites were proposed and closely considered.
